Olympia Co-Ed Traveling Team |
There was Ultimate in Olympia pre early-90s. A team originally formed in 1983 by Chris Wudtke traveled for at least a few more years to NW tournaments and also played in the original PSUL (when it was about 8-10 teams). We typically played with at least one woman on the field (although most/all other teams were all men.) We were competitive although we did not win any of the I-5 tournaments. Also, those were the days when it was pretty easy to commandeer a van and drive off to those tourneys.
The next chapter in Olympia ultimate history was formed in the spring of 1992. That team was called "The Dawn of Spawn" and after that, just "Spawn." At one point we had a scrapbook with some photos and notes about how we did at tournaments and leagues, but I don't know where it ended up.
Spawn played spring and fall league up in Seattle, and traveled to Oregon (Portland, Corvallis, Eugene, Bend, and Ashland), BC (Vancouver and Victoria), and even all the way to Calgary a couple times.
Spawn also hosted a local tournament occasionally. One year it was called "Buns in the Rain," and a couple times it was called "Hick Huck."
The only artifacts I have from those days are some phone lists. We'd usually start the season with a phone list with nicknames for the regulars.
Here's Spawn at some Seattle league (fall?) in 1994. Standing are: Charlie H., Ron L., Mike G., Melinda B., Ian F., Susan S., (kneeling and sitting) Corey M., Rich, Jeff B.
