2008 Olympia Co-Ed Traveling Team |

For those of you who missed it (and there weren't many who did), Olympia fielded three teams at this year's Geofest.

Evergreen assembled a team for the first time in a long time. They also invited a few alumni, and for a few points, I thought it was 1998 all over again. The Evergreeners, decked in green (yes, Travis, you should have guessed that), finished tied for third, going 3-2. The rest of the Olympia squad split into two teams. |
BizzarO, in remarkably matching blue, also went 3-2 and tied for third. It was captained by Paul and Molly, but whenever I looked over at their field after applause and yelling, it was always Molly in the end zone with disc. Note: Picture is Samson, not Molly. Sorry. |

And, finally, the third Olympia squad, dressed in traditional Oly orange, went 4-1, winning* the tournament. That's right, an Oly team won a tournament. We haven't won a tournament in at least the eight years I've been here. It does feel good. Oly Orange also beat both the other oly squads, earning hometown bragging rights (except for BizzarO's Todd, who did school Jon enough times to claim a personal victory). But Jon and Pam, captains of Orange, did get the last laugh -- who knew that motley crew would bring us our first trophy? And yes, for those of you who remember all those years of giving the Geofest trophy to other teams, there is an official Geofest trophy. It's in Tacoma right now, but we'll be bring it home soon. |

Here's Ken making a D block in the endzone. |
Many thanks to everyone who pulled off the tournament. Corey, the TD, who made it all happen. Who knew you could plan an entire tournament in 48 hours? Lisa and the other person who I forgot who bought the food. Ron and friends who set up the fields. Will who got the fields for free. Ian for the beer. Toby for the pizza. Jess and Jess for pulling together a bellingham/peninsula team. Jacey for bringing a great team -- I don't remember where they were from, but here's a hint: they could see Russia from where they played. And everyone else who helped out....
* So some may argue that the championship title is slightly in doubt because a championship game was never actually played and two teams ended up 4-1. But the other team suggested more strongly then we did that a sixth game wasn't in the cards. So I call that a victory. Or at the very least a tie where they list our names first.
Hey everybody. Andrew did an excellent job on his always-witty recap. Since the home teams were busy hosting the event, we didn't make time for our traditional captain's awards, but here are some post-tourney picks by the Oly captains.
Here's what Will says about Evergreen:
"Well honestly my captain's award would have to go to Hannah and Travis for agreeing to come down and play with a bunch of kids they'd never met before, and for sticking around despite some early friction. They were a great influence and huge assets to the team. We wouldn't have done nearly as well without the Alumni presence, so huge props to them."
Here's what Molly and Paul say about Oly Blue... BizzarO:
"Bizarre-O decided to give our male captain's award to Dave. Dave had a good attitude all day and was always joking and had a smile on his face. He also perfected how to use is body to box out the defender so that he could catch the disc in the end zone. Bizarre-O was lucky to have him on the team. For the female captain's award we decided to give it to Cynthia. When she was out on the field she cut back and forth and to the end zone and back again. She never gave up when she dropped the disc, but once she started catching the disc there was no stopping her. Her attitude, smile, and hard work earned her this nomination."
And here's what Pam and Jon say about Oly Orange:
"Our female captain's award goes to Lisa for her all-around excellent play including a couple of handblocks, layout bids, and some great catches and throws for scores. Ken's awesome defense, speed, and handling skills earns him the male captain's award in addition to a personalized sideline cheer: "Ken, Ken, he's our man, if he can't do it....we're f*#ked!" Both Ken and Lisa's excellent play were a huge factor in allowing Oly to go 4:1 and become Geofest champs! We were also glad to welcome Jamie, Ducky, and Chris as they made their Oly debut....all three had great games! Thanks again to our TD, Corey, for a successful Geofest 2008!"
"Put your entire team in the spotlight. Thanks to them, you're able to experience a level of success that you wouldn't have been able to achieve on your own. Remember that when it's your turn to help one of them out."
