What are tournaments, and which tournaments will we go to?

For those people new to frisbee tournaments, tournaments are the pinnacle of frisbee fun. They are usually two-day events, with the Olympia Team playing other northwest teams. The level of play is higher than pickup, and the comradeship is tremendous. Olympia’s first tournament is in May in Wenatchee. We will probably also attend tournaments in Seattle (July), Portland (early August), Burlington (late Aug), TriCities (late Oct.), and our own Olympia Geofest (Sept?). Others are possible, as much as we desire. Olympia hosts Geofest, and many thanks to Mr. Mike Santana for volunteering to run it again this year. Mike will be contacting Evergreen very soon to nail down a date, and then he will e-mail everyone. Mike, your lieutenants are Toby (right hand man), Jen (food), Molly (party arrangements), Ron (marking fields), and Jim (field setup).

When/what are practices?

Practices will be held every other Tuesday starting in April. At 5:30 at Evergreen. (Yes, Jessee, these are the ‘practices’ that you’ve been yearning for.) The practice schedule is April 4 and 18, May 2, 16, and 30, June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22, September 5 and 19, and October 3 and 17. Practices will cover everything from how to throw a frisbee to strategies on zones to how to win at frisbee party games. Since the idea of practicing is team and individual improvement, everyone should attend with an open attitude towards learning new things and constructive feedback. Practices will be focused on skills, but speed/endurance is part of it, too. Everyone, whether or not you want to be on the team, is invited to attend the practices. To be on the team, you are expected to make at least half of the practices.

How much does it cost?

Compared to other activities, frisbee is quite cheap. The only costs for the team are gas money for transportation, food, and tournament fees. Tournament fees are generally $15-$30 per person per tournament. These need to be paid in advance, and historically someone has needed to front a few hundred dollars, which can be problematic. For the new Team, everyone has to chip in $50 when they sign up for the team to get a fund started. All of this money will go directly to tournament fees, and the fund will be managed by our very own Lisa Harrison, CFP, LLP, RSVP. If the $50 fee makes it unworkable for a student on a tight budget, talk to me at 493-2143 and we’ll make arrangements.

Who is in charge?

We all are! But utopian philosophies aside, we will have a team meeting to choose a captain(s) once the team is formed. In the meantime, Ms. Jen Ownbey has agreed to keep things moving along, so contact her with any questions and to sign up.

I am so excited to play, how do I sign up?

Well, talk to Jen Ownbey! Her e-mail is adventurousjen@w-link.com. There will be a cap on the number of players we take on the team, so sign up early! We’re shooting for 6-7 women and about 10 men at each tournament. We’ll take a few more players than that on the team, since not everyone will be able to attend every tournament. Reminder: to sign up all you need is a desire to play more frisbee, a commitment to half of the practices, an expectation to attend half of the tournaments, and $50. What a great deal!

Have more questions? Talk to Jen, Andrew, or someone at pickup and we’ll get them answered.
