Hanford Howl 2006

OLYMPIA SUCCESS AT HANFORD HOWL! That's right, our very own Olympia Artesians finished 2nd place in the B-pool with a 4-3 record. Probably our best tournament of the year. This year's team was lead by Captain Ron and Jen. Spirited play by Brett, Clint, and Jessee earned them the coveted captains' awards for their play through the weekend. Donnie Darko and the Sparkle Motion Dance team provided the Halloween costumes, with a few brief appearances of Frank, the bunny.

Day one, Olympia went 2-2, including a near upset of the top seeded team. Highlights included Jim's monster defense on the dump, Beth's forehand hucks to Lisa, Austin's d's and layouts, and Clint and Lisa's remarkable comeback from 200 points down in the spades game.

Our cup has them trapped on the line.

Day two we were met with the legendary tri-cities wind. Despite the harsh conditions that turned hucks into dumps and let loose house-sized tumbleweeds that nearly killed Austin, Olympia continued to prevail. Winning games one and two put us into the finals against our neighbors to the north, Tacoma. And, you know, Tacoma cheats and we felt sorry for them so we let them win. Just to be nice.

The tumbleweed that handblocked Austin.

Austin, Andrew, Jim, Chad, Brett, Ron, Clint, Travis, Victor, Corey, Tony
Lisa, Beth, Jen, Jessee, Hannah, Pam

Additional highlights included three Callahan's (Hannah, Tony, and Travis). You all have to figure out which ones were ones we got vs. ones we gave up, but I'd recommend talking to Tony first. Other high(low)lights included many new members of the Ron Comer club including, in order of increasing pain, Chad (upper lip), Andrew (ankle/back), Hannah (ankle), Corey (toenail), Jim (knee), Austin (knee) and Travis (knee). Remarkably, the charter member of the Ron Comer club (yes, that would be Ron, stick with me now) stayed injury free. And an extra special thanks to Captain Ron for dinner!
