South Sound Ultimate Players Board"Promoting Ultimate frisbee in South Sound as a healthy, fun, and spirited community activity." |
Public relations are particularly important for organizations that engage in youth outreach. This committee creates or approves media that represents the Board, basically, any place the SSUP name is used. This includes parts of the happen.net/ultimate web site, and some (all, going forward?) league brochures and promotional materials. Committee members also share information with local news outlets, such as the Daily Olympian, and manage community communication vehicles such as the Geoduck Yahoo group and the SUPP Discussion Forum (supp.forumotion.com) .
These folks coordinate with City of Olympia to run spring league. They determine teams, format, and schedule, with input from the Board. This co-ed league is designed for all players, including beginners. Players will get the opportunity to learn throwing, marking, and basic offensive and defensive strategies. The league has taken place on Sunday afternoons at LBA Park in Olympia.
These folks coordinate with DiscNW to run fall league. They determine teams, format, and schedule, with input from the Board. This co-ed competitive league is designed for players with a general knowledge of the sport. Players should have experience throwing, marking, and basic offensive and defensive strategies. The league has taken place late Tuesday evenings at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.
SSUP's only SSUP-only run league. Indoors at the St. Martin's Pavilion on Wednesday nights in from Feb-April.
The pick-up committee is in charge of scheduling pick-up games that currently occur at the Evergreen State College. They occur between one and two times per week depending on the season. The pick-up committee helps to welcome new players and encourages others to make them welcome. They communicate with other committees when it comes to scheduling pick-up times and dates as to avoid double scheduling. They also keep an outlook on the current situation with fields in case of a lack of Evergreen field availability at some point. They make sure that Ron leaves cones locked to the fence and that someone knows the combination. They also make sure that Jon is there to set up the fields before everyone else shows up late each week. (I'm mostly just joking about the last two sentences).
The co-ed travelling committee is responsible for ensuring that we have at least one mixed gender travelling team. They are responsible for determining the objectives and goals of the team and how the team will operate; however they are not responsible for running the team. Unlike leagues, teams are not SSUP sponsored. Basically, the co-ed committee IS responsible for whether or not the team is competitive and how the players will be selected (caps etc.) and all that hairy stuff because we do not want those issues falling back on the captains.
This group is responsible for ensuring that we have at least one local tournament.
We need a new chair for this committee.
Without fields to play on, we cannot exist as a meaningful Board. As the population in Thurston County continues to grow, existing fields will become more and more crowded. We have been blessed with great free fields at TESC for many years, but we need to identify and pursue alternatives for leagues and for team practices and pickup for times when TESC fields are unavailable. The way that public fields are reserved relies on past use. To establish and maintain "past use" history in multiple locations we must reserve fields as SSUP, not as "a pickup game" or "Team X" which may change dramatically in the future.
