SSUP Board Meeting Minutes

12/13/11

Present: Ian, Todd, Andrew D., Pam, Jon

Absent: Chris A., Andrea

Pickup:

TESC fields are closed, as are lots of other fields we've looked at. The winter league will be longer this year, which provides for playing indoors during January and February. Pickup committee is looking into the possibility of securing a turf field. Pam has contacted Olympia high school, and will call Tumwater. For now, pickup will be at Capital high school when the weather conditions are favorable./p>

Summer League (Jon):

League went well and people seemed to have fun. Attendance was an issue for the final week. We talked about making it an eight week league, but until we get the attendance drop off issue figured out, Jon recommends leaving it at 6. Possible solutions to the attendance issue: award a winner after week 3 and then again after week 6, make the later games worth more points.

City of Lacey is awesome. We loved the signs, the fields, the snacks, and the support from the staff.

Spring League:

Seattle Spring League would definitely conflict with our Spring League. Before we get too carried away with trying to figure out how to accommodate both leagues, Jon will send out an email to the community to gauge actual interest in the Seattle League.

We discussed Mike’s various suggestions for making the league less competitive (Pod system) and alternative methods for making the teams more balanced. Board recommended to Mike waiting until after week #2 to draft teams. First two weeks will be used for teaching strategy and rules, which will be taught in groups, and led by veteran volunteers. Team captains will be randomly assigned to a team.

  • We discussed using spirit rankings to determine the tournament seeding, adding a cheer contest, and trying to emphasize better attendance.
  • Mike is going to need more help this year.
  • Nobody likes the fields at LBA, but we like the city of Olympia. Jon is going to contact city of Lacey about field space at Rainier Vista.

New rules may be implemented for part or all of the season. Rule changes to the league will include:

  • No zone defense
  • teams must rotate the pull to all of their willing players
  • “all touch” scores are worth two points, and ladies throwing for a score is worth two points.

    Fall League (Todd):

  • Corey is a calm loser
  • Dante rule – if someone knows that they will miss 4 or more games during the season, they should not signup.
  • We should talk to Jason Donette about making fall league shirts for all of the teams. Red’s shirts cost $10 and were awesome.
  • Ian is going to check on insurance rates for fall league and Geofest.

    SSUP Business: For future

  • We need to be more consistent about our identity. Ian will change the name of the Listserv from Geoduck to SSUP.
  • Should we change the name of our tournament? SSUP or SSUPA fest?
  • Ian is willing to listen to suggestions about making the website more user friendly. He is going to make sure that SSUP is shown on every page.
  • Ian is going to “clean up” the minutes.
  • Pam is going to ask Chris Gibbs to join the Board
  • Toby does not like root beer with his summer sausage.

    Geofest (Ian):

  • Getting the right type and number of teams to the tournament causes a lot of stress, so the tournament will consist of 8 teams this year.
  • Ian will send money to Lacey to reserve 2 fields.
  • There was an issue with Bellingham at this year’s tournament. After being asked to bring two equal strength teams, it was obvious that one team was built to win. Similar thing happened in 2010 with Rowboat. Bellingham will be invited in 2012, however they will be strongly reminded about the skill level expectations.

    Next Meeting

Sunday, February 19, 7:00 or after pickup, at Ian’s house. Todd will facilitate and Pam will be the secretary.
