SSUP League/Pickup Philosophy (Andrew)

Andrew revisited his proposal to develop a table/matrix clarifying the differences between the different leagues, pickup, and the traveling team. Andrew handed out a revised version of the table he provided us at the last meeting with the proposal to jointly edit his language. The Board discussed the appropriateness of the various categories. Andrew promised to email the draft to the Board for our review, and that we would send comments back to him within two weeks (seeing as no one offered comments the first time around!).

Fall League (Todd):

Todd has requested September 29-Nov 17 at South Sound Stadium. It will run for 8 weeks from 8-9:30pm. As far as captains, Will and Pam have volunteered thusfar. Andrea owes us and should be a captain. Signups will be coming once we hear back from Bunny at DiskNW. We still need to know the cost, but the previously set price is $95/hr (about $140/night). Registration should hopefully be the same or close to last year.

Indoor League (Andrew):

Jeff Johnson @ OPARD indicated no availability for gyms. Options seem to be (1) try to lean on OPARD a bit more to see if they can get us something, (2) Use St. Martin’s again (where we are at the bottom of the totem pole), or (3) investigate Evergreen. It would likely start January 10 and run for 6-8 weeks. Decision made to push back on city for next year, and talk to St Martin’s and see if we can get higher priority.

Pickup (all):

Attendance has not been good for pickup. Should we drop Thursday pickup? Or drop practice Tuesdays? Question: Do we need to have less pickup? There was discussion that the team practice definitely draws from the pickup pool. Maybe we have to account for the seasonality of participation (i.e. do not have two days of pickup per week when numbers are low). Andrew suggested that we have an outreach brainstorm at next SSUP meeting to discuss how to increase participation. One idea was more “gimmicks” to get people out to pickup (such as “old” vs “young” games). We need to re-examine this again by next June when it becomes an issue again. In the meantime, lets push through this year through September till fall league starts. Therefore, September 24 will be the last day of Thursday pickup, and we will use gimmicks to increase participation until then. Pam and the Pickup Committee will send an email about the last Thursday pickup in September. Pickup will start at 2pm Sundays at that same time as Thursdays end and Fall League starts.

Local Tournament (Ian):

Numbers – We have commitments from enough men to play (15), and Ian assumes we will have a couple more. We almost have enough women, too (8), with a few women that haven’t been heard from. Ian asked if 5 women per team would be ok – Board consensus was yes. In sum, Ian is assuming we have enough people for two teams.

How to make teams – Ian received only two comments on how to split teams, and both favored a Master’s team. This approach works out well for men. We would not use conventional age cutoffs, but make them up based on median age of the players. There are a few (older) men that might change the balance for men. The masters concept seems to work well for women too. Decision made to go with the Masters team/younger team concept.

Field and Date – Looking at the weekend of September 26/27. Evergreen was contacted early and responded that they had not figured out their schedule yet, and Ian has not been successful at contacting them since that time. We could reserve Rainier Vista now, and set the date, OR we could wait for Evergreen. The cost at Rainier Vista might be more (~$10/person, or perhaps $10 for out of towners and $5 for locals). The question came up at to whether we would even want Evergreen if we could get it – the response to this question was mixed, with Beth in favor of using Evergreen. The Regional Athletic Complex or “RAC” fields (a third option in Hawks Prairie) are awesome. RAC will cost $60/hour ($30/field for two fields), while Rainier Vista will be $45/hr ($15/field for three fields). Ian expressed an inclination to go with RAC first, with Rainier Vista as a backup plan. It will be tight (financially), but we can do it. Decision made to pass on Evergreen and pursue RAC first, with Rainier Vista as a backup.

Final details – Ian will send an email to the listserve to ask for someone to plan/host the party (he does not want to). He will also send Beth a list of women to harass to play at Geofest.
