SSUP Board Meeting Minutes

01/14/08

Retreat (Andrew):

Andrew couldn't find any place that met the criteria (close, affordable, nice) so we decided to look for a banquet room somewhere in town. Troy will try Ramblin' Jack's first. Kathy is working on an agenda (something like this: introduce board, answer questions, brainstorm planning/goals for the next year, next 3 years, next 5 years, eat dinner, planning work for 2008). Everyone will be invited, and pay their own way.

New Board Members:

We couldn't recall where we'd gotten with this, so we decided to start over. We decided on a range of at least 9 members, and at most 15. We agreed on some potential new members which we will ask. These are people from the following three groups of interest (currently under-represented on the board): Evergreen students, St. Martin's students, and women. Andrew, Beth (2), Ian, Mike all have people to contact.

Spring League (Troy):

Troy wondered if we wanted to make any changes this year. He noted that fall league was great, and we could make spring more like that. He also noted that since the first year, we haven't added many team members as a result of the league (although the number of players in the league has gone up each year). We decided to keep it the way it was, with possible additions of more non-hat teams like last year's high school team. Perhaps local college teams. Troy and Andy will run the show again.

Troy asked people to consider a third league.

Listserve/Bulletin board discussion:

There was some concern that this might not be an issue. There have been some complaints, but it seems like we might be able to mitigate the problems with education, and the people who don't like the current situation can change to the daily digest, or just visit the Yahoo group site to get messages (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/geoduck/).

We talked about other options, like 2 listserves or bulletin boards, then Beth announced she was done moderating the listserve (after 4 years. Thanks, Beth). So Kathy and Ian volunteered to work on this. Beth said she'd be willing to clean up the member list before stepping down. There are 140 or so members, with about half of those classified as active. Andrew's boss uses the list to supervise him, but he doesn't seem to mind. Ian said he might try setting up a bulletin board just for fun (what a geek).

Capital City Classic (Mike):

This will be a one day tournament (probably April 5th) showcasing local teams like Evergreen, St. Martin's, and Jeremy's HS team. We need a fourth team. Corey and Mike are trying to put together another local high school team, and they will ask Todd for help. If that fails, they'll ask Andrew for help in getting a Tacoma HS team.

Team (Beth):

Ian brought up the traveling team because he wants to be more involved this year. After brief discussion, it became clear that Beth and Mike want to decide what to do before anything else happens, so the board stepped back a bit and will wait to hear from them.
