SSUP Board Meeting Minutes

5/21/07

Local Tourney (Corey):

We decided to do Geofest on June 9th at Evergreen. This is the day before Spring League playoffs. (We also considered June 16th at Rainier Vista or Horizon Point in Lacey). We discussed whether to split up the team or go A + B. We decided to keep it like last year, and keep the travelling team together, especially since this will be replacing our previously scheduled June tournament, Logjam, which is not happening.

Corey will send an email to see if we can get a volunteer to organize Team B.

Public Relations (Ian):

I entered us into the Olympian sourcebook for this year. Andrew noted that I could've used his phone number. Next year I will.

League (Andy):

Troy emailed us before the meeting, asking for feedback on the following:

  1. Location: South Sound Stadium on a weekday evening or Lacey's Horizon Point on a weekend day.
  2. Dates: I recommend mid-Sept through mid-Oct, but want to clarify potential conflicts with traveling team and Geofest.
  3. Disc NW involvement: In order to pull this off by "ourselves", we need insurance. I highly recommend using DiscNW to front the league (see below). The only downside is that we wouldn't get the profits.
  4. How to make it competitive. I recommend having the league open to anyone who wants to sign-up, but that we should market towards competitive players.

Here's what we came up with:

  1. Location: Yes, those both would be good, with the stadium being our first choice on Monday at 8 pm. Second choice would be HP on Sat. am, followed by Sunday afternoon.
  2. Dates: We recommend late September to mid-November. We discussed potential conflicts with Tacoma's league, and decided that ours would have to be very early and short to avoid that, so better to not worry about it. A longer league makes it less of an issue if you're going to miss a game. We'd like 8 months, but would like to keep the cost under $30.
  3. Disc NW involvement: Let's do this.
  4. How to make it competitive. We will start with invites, and see how many we get. People will not be excluded, but we'll explain that "competitive" means we'll play zones and you'll want to have a forehand. We didn't come up with very specific recommendations for this, so perhaps we could discuss it again if needed.

Next Meeting

Andrew brought up the idea of a planning retreat. Also, if we have time, still on the agenda for next meeting is a lower priority discussion about who (other than board members) can attend meetings, and how that will work. Meeting will be Monday, June 18th at Ian's house, at 7 p.m.
