South Sound Ultimate Players Board"Promoting Ultimate frisbee in South Sound as a healthy, fun, and spirited community activity." |
Last meeting's minutes approved. From now on, unless there's discussion resulting in changes, I'll leave this note off of the minutes.
We started with committee reports:
Working with Jeff from City of Olympia again this year. We're making changes to the evaluation form, including adding a way for players to tell us how many games they plan to attend. League details: starting 4/29, $25 per player, 5:30 p.m. Sunday games. 1st week clinic, then 5 games, then one day playoffs. Andy wants to have the discs in time for the captain's meeting this year. He needs a design. An issue was raised: will there be attendance issues on Memorial Day weekend, and when the coed team goes to Wenatchee? Not resolved. Troy expressed dissatisfaction with the flyer provided by the city. Ian volunteered to try to improve it. Andy will email updated evaluation form to board members.
Beth started by handing out a printed sheet with information (very nice!). We've included most of it below, but left out the Team Selection and Team Philosophy sections, as they are being rewritten. We had some lively discussion about those topics, and also practice schedule days. Not much was resolved. We'll revisit these topics again.

Practice
Practices will focus on conditioning and skills.
Santana and Beth will both be gone for much of March so official practice will not begin until the first week in April. However, we want to make sure people are conditioning and working on skills prior to official practice so we will hold unofficial practices during March.
Unofficial practices will be held during the month of March at 1pm on Sundays before pickup (March 4, 11, 18, 25). People who are interested injoining the co-ed team are encouraged to attend, but these practicesare open to anyone. 4th: Ian -- throwing clinic, 11th: Andrew,18th: Santana, 25th: Corey
To kick off the official practice season we will have "Midnight March Madness," Saturday night, March 31th at 8 pm (tentatively, out at Evergreen). This will be a night-time,glow-in-the-dark, casual game of ultimate with the goal of getting everyone injured the spirit of the season.
Official practice will begin the first week inApril (possibly Tuesday, April 3rd, depending upon when weekday pickup is scheduled) and will go weekly until Potlatch. Practices will then go bi-weekly until Kleinman Eruption at which point practice will end.
Andrew met with Mike and Jeremy to gather information. He's created a list of all the possible places to play in our area.
The saturday games at Rainier Vista have been a success. 8 community players joined the high school kids. Jeremy attributes this to the previous board meeting, so we've had some positive results already. Jeremy is working on developing long term contacts at high schools and getting PE folks from Timberline more involved in ultimate. Also, he's working on getting an intermural game going, so the Timberline kids can play against other schools.
For this year's spring league, Jeremy would like to have a high school kid's team. Notes:
Corey is looking into the possibility of using Rainier Vista instead of Evergreen, and the possibility of doing a two day tournament. We discussed the merits of these ideas, a few ideas for party locations, and Ian ranted about bad teams in the past, requesting careful invitations. By now I was into my third beer, and didn't take good notes. I'll be more careful in the future.
We talked about getting an article in the Olympian. Jeremy recommended I contact Gail Wood. Jen will look into another possible contact as well. We identified April 1st as the deadline to shoot for for providing information to use in an article announcing SSUP to the press.
We need a logo.
