South Sound Ultimate Players (SSUP) Leagues: Fall 2011

Fall League 2011

Congratulations to Molasses

Santana put together a team of older veterans (including 6 of the 9 oldest players in the league, and 3 of the oldest 3) in hopes that zone defenses could lead him to his second consecutive Fall League Championship. The team learned an array of different zones, and several offensive schemes as well, along the way. With 4 evenly balanced teams, most of the games were very close, including a memorable game in week 2 when Green beat Red 17-16.

Heading into the playoffs, Molasses went up against Amazing Grays. Molasses had beaten the Grays pretty easily earlier in the season, but the Grays were improving quickly, and Mandy was due to rejoin the team for the playoffs, making them a dangerous playoff foe. Alas, Mandy could not attend the first round of playoffs, and the Molasses zones proved too sticky for the team in gray.

In the other semi, Red Light District went up against A.J. and the Green Goes. Green had begun the season with 3 straight wins, but struggled a bit after that, although they almost beat Molasses on Halloween. Red was buoyed by the return of deep threat Akua, and the team height of Red Light District prevailed, 18-14.

Fall League Champs

The finals night was cold and calm, and the games started late, after a field use mixup with soccer kids. Even without a wind, Molasses played 3 different zone defenses and stifled Red's long game. Molasses was efficient on offense, and built a commanding halftime lead (9-4 maybe?). But Red Light District turned on their charms in the second half, moving the disc quickly across the field, looking for openings in the zone, and finding them. As the score tightened, a few contested calls came up, almost all of which were handled gracefully.

As the night grew colder and everyone could feel that the time was late, Red had nearly tied the score. We decided to play one more before the cap. Molasses scored quickly when Todd cut deep from the center handler position after a swing, and Ian got a backhand huck off before the mark was set up, 13-11 Molasses. A fortunate misinterpretation of the league rules by the "rules czar" led to an exciting finish. Playing to 14, Red scored the next 2 goals to tie. The tense crowd of about 5 or 6 players from the other game wondered if Molasses would really let this game slip away.

After a few swings, Wynne turned her in cut into a deep cut, as the Molasses handlers moved the disc back and forth. Ian saw Wynne clearing deep, with her defender a few steps behind, and put a backhand too deep into the endzone and too far to the left. The disc was in the air for a long, long time. Wynne, aided by a mid-game Halloween candy boost (thanks captain!), ran hard to the space, deaf to the shouts and cheers from teammates, and made a full extension layout, and when she finally stopped sliding, she turned the disc perpendicular to the field demonstrating control, and the Molasses team had won.

League Coordinator Todd later remarked, "It was the best finish to any game I have ever played in." Santana became the first captain with two Fall championships, and the first captain to win the same SSUP league two years in a row. With Mandy back on the field, Amazing Grays took third place with an 18-11 victory, and wondered what might have been...
