South Sound Ultimate Players

Geofest 2010, Saturday, September 25th

"Promoting Ultimate frisbee in South Sound as a healthy, fun, and spirited community activity."

Geofest is pronounced "gooey-fest."

Geofest is designed primarly as a chance for a wide range of local players to experienced the competitive play of a tournament. The best way to make this a positive experience for as many players as possible is to have a tournament with evenly matched teams at a less competitive level than most local tournaments. Our hope is that many players will have success and fun and hopefully decide that they like ultimate, resulting in a larger, stronger community; and more participants for leagues and pickup.

We hope to grow the tournament in the future, involving more teams from the surrounding area. We invite teams that demonstrate good spirit, and a level of play that encourages new or occasional players to want to play more.

It is a difficult challenge to match teams with our expected level of play, especially if we're not sure how many Olympia teams we'll have (sometimes we have enough for 3 teams). Each year we will try to ensure that the teams playing represent the highest level of spirit and the skill level typical of the B pool in other area tournaments.

Most Importantly: No alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances/acts on the fields! Keep dogs and cats on leashes. These fields are really sweet, and we do not want to lose our access. Also, no amplified music. Singing is OK.

Sponsored by Fish Brewing Company in Olympia

Fish Brewing Company is a small, locally owned craft brewery producing truly authentic British-style organic ales and German style lagers for beer lovers.

The Fish Tale BrewPub is also an excellent choice for a meal or a snack, and it's located at the corner of Jefferson and Legion Way (515 Jefferson St. SE) in downtown Olympia. There's plenty of free parking nearby. You can call them at (360) 943-3650. Also, check out their menu: Fish Tale Brew Pub Menu.

Sponsored by Apollo's Pizza and Pasta in Olympia

Apollo's has great pizza, pasta, and calzones; plus, a reliably good beer selection. You can call them at (360) 754-7444. Apollo's is close to the party, and has plenty of free parking.

Fun Facts about Geofest '10

Every team except one won at least one game, five of the nine teams won at least two games. No teams went undefeated. Here are some pictures from last year. This year's coming soon.

Format

Three pools of three. Play each team in your pool, and one crossover, then we'll reseed and have two round brackets from there. If W/L records are equal we'll use points for reseeding. Note: the three Oly teams are equal strength, so don't get too excited about playing a "1" seed or a "3" seed.

You're guaranteed a new opponent in every round but the last one. Reseeding will be by record, and then by points if necessary.

Rules

2 timeouts per game; you can use them anytime before the hard cap, which will be a whistle blown 5 minutes before the end of the round. No soft cap. Halftime at 7. Games to 14 (although most games will get time-capped, I think). Teams may not play more than 4 men at a time. Defense does not need to match offense's ratio. Teams are encouraged to assess points at a rate of 1 point per 5 minutes when opponents are not ready on time. Teams may play shorthanded if they want, to avoid assessments.

We will play with the Eleventh edition, which you can find online here, but I wanted to point out a part that many people either don't know about or don't care to follow. Please read, know, and follow these rules!

If there's contact between the thrower and the marker's arms/legs, it's a foul on the marker unless their arms/legs were completely stationary. If there's contact between the thrower and the marker's torso, it's a foul on whoever initiated the contact (unless the marker is also violating a marking rule, like disc space). However, if this contact occurs as a result of the thrower and marker both vying for the same unoccupied position, and therefore it's unclear who "initiated" the contact, it's a foul on the marker. [11th Ref: XVI.H.3.a)]

"Disc space" is now a marking violation (see below). The new definition of disc space now includes provisions against wrapping one's arms around the thrower and straddling the pivot foot. This is done by defining disc space as the space between the thrower and "any line segment between two points on the marker's body". What this means is that if an imaginary line is drawn that connects the fingertips of a marker's two hands (for example), that line cannot touch any point on the thrower's body, and has to be one disc's diameter away from the thrower's torso and pivot. If the thrower is being fouled on the mark, he or she can choose to call the disc space violation instead of calling a foul. [11th Ref: XIV.B.3.]

Marking violations (disc space, fast count, double team, and vision blocking) can now be called an unlimited number of times during a stall count, without stopping play. Just like in the 10th edition, when these violations are called the marker has to drop their count by one. Furthermore, if a marking violation is called, the marker is not allowed to resume their count until he or she rectifies the violation. [11th Ref: XIV.B.]

Food and Party

Food: We will provide some food at the fields, including fruit, snacks, and something with protein. This will not be deluxe, but it will be useful sustenance.

Water, Ice: We will provide a cooler full of ice, and some bags to use in case of injury. There is one water bubbler near the fields, so please bring water. There will most likely be a line at the bubbler between games.

Party: We'll have a party at House Fox Run again. $10 gets you plenty of pizza, beer, fun, and games.

Questions: Can be directed to Ian Ferguson, at .

Fields

We're playing at the Regional Athletic Complex (RAC) in Lacey, WA. This is an amazingly great facility. Learn more about it here: RAC Web Site.

The RAC Web Site has a map showing which fields are ours (Fields 2, 3, and 4).

From the North:

Come down I-5 to exit 111. Turn left, over the freeway, and head south on 510 East, also call Marvin Rd. Travel about 1.2 miles. Go left at a stoplight onto Steilacoom Rd SE. It's the first right, there's a big blue sign on the right, for Regional Athletic Complex.

From the South:

Come up I-5 to exit 111. Follow the signs for 510 East. There's a rotary where the signs are not so good, so be careful. Once you're past the rotary, you'll come to a light, where you'll go right onto Marvin Rd. Travel about 1 mile. Go left at a stoplight onto Steilacoom Rd SE. It's the first right, there's a big blue sign on the right, for Regional Athletic Complex. (If you end up taking the wrong turn at the rotary, and driving by Walmart and the KFC (which is what they want you to do, I think), you'll come to Martin Way, go left for a block, then right on Marvin Rd.)

From the Park Entrance:

Right after the park entrance is a rotary. The first exit goes to the softball fields, the second, to the soccer fields (us). If you are going the right direction, and it's not cloudy, you'll have a nice view of the mountain. Go as far back into the parking lot as you can. There's a big playground on the right as you come in, and then a smaller one on the left in the back of the park. Our fields (2, 3, and 4) are to the right of the smaller playground.
