South Sound Ultimate Players Board"Promoting Ultimate frisbee in South Sound as a healthy, fun, and spirited community activity." |
We have 8 committees, 3 of which are for specific leagues. Follow the link below to learn more about our committees, then volunteer to help on one.
SSUP Board OriginationThis winter we had a meeting to discuss the possibility of forming a board to handle planning for and management of Oly ultimate community events.
First we talked about some of the possible benefits of having a board. A board could help in the following ways:
Second, we talked about our priorities, goals, and volunteer interests, to get a sense of what we as individuals were bringing to the table, and what we were hoping to take from it. In general, the people present had a variety of goals, ranging from improving skills to growing the community. It became clear, as we went around the room, that we have a good group of folks with similar priorities, but also. some diverse, but not contradictory, hopes for the future of ultimate in Olympia.
After this, we decided Yes, let's have a board. Then we talked about what kind of time commitment it would mean, and figured roughly 1 meeting a month, maybe with some extra work early in the process. We also talked about using focussed planning parties to gather information and discuss things like traveling teams, Geofest, and leagues.
More discussion led to an agreement of sorts on 5 main areas of interest for the board: Pickup, Co-ed Traveling Team, Geofest, Spring League, and Outreach/Promotion. However, we are also very interested in additional teams such as a competitive men's team. And we are also very interested in additional leagues, such as having a beginners league and an advanced league. Eventually, we may investigate things like non-profit status, sponsorship, membership, etc, but we haven't gone there yet.
Currently, we have 11 volunteers for the board. We would like to keep a good gender balance on the board, as well as a balance between traveling team players, and pickup only players. We want to include a variety of perspectives. We started by having two meetings, 1 in late January and 1 in early February to do the work of starting the board. Anyone who volunteered at that time was accepted as a member of the board. If you want to have input into what the board does or is, feel free to send us your opinion about anything ultimate related.
We'll have more information about the board posted here eventually.
Matt created a cool logo, but it needs some color, and other work to get from pencil drawing to web site/flyers.
